12 μαίνομαι
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `rage, be furious, of the senses, be excited' (Il.); rarely act. ἐκ-μαίνω `make furious' (E., Ar.; μαίνω Orph.), aor. μῆναι (S., E.) with intr. midd. μήνασθαι (Z 160, Theoc.)Derivatives: 1. From the present: μαινάς, - άδος f. `the raging, Bacchantess, Mänade' (Il.; Schwyzer 508, Sommer Münch. Stud. 4, 4); μαινόλης, Aeol. Dor. - λας, f. - λις `raging, excited' (Sapph., A.; Schwyzer 408 and Mus. Helv. 3, 49ff., Chantraine Form. 237). 2. From the root: μανία, - ίη `fury, madness' (IA.) cf. Scheller Oxytonierung 39); μανικός, μανιώδης `furious, raging' (IA.), f. also μανιάς `id.' (after λύσσα: - άς, Schwyzer 508). Verbaladj. like ἐμ-μανής `raging' (IA), prob. hypostasis (to μανία) after ἐμ-φανής a.o. ( ἐμ-μαίνομαι first Act. Ap., J.).Etymology: On μάντις etc. s. v. With the zero-grade yot-present μαίνομαι from *μαν-ι̯ο-μαι agree formally several forms from diff. languages: Skt. mányate = Av. mainyeite `think', Celt., OIr. do-moiniur `believe, have the opinion', Slav., e.g. OCS mьnjǫ `think, consider as', Lith. miniù `think, remember' (innovation for older menù?; s. Fraenkel Wb.), IE *mn̥-i̯o \/ e-. With μανῆ-ναι agree formally also the Balto-Slav. inf. Lith. minė́-ti, OCS mьně-ti as well as Goth. 3. sg. munai-Þ ' μέλλει, thinks (to do)'; genetic connection however is doubtful, as Goth. munaiÞ may as well agree with Skt. manāy-ati `be eager' and for posthom. μανῆναι (as if from μανέεται) also analogical origin ( φαίνομαι: φανῆναι; J. Schmidt KZ 37, 44) is possible; on Lith. minė́ti etc. s. also Fraenkel l.c. and Lexis 2, 196. Also μήνασθαι (analogical or from *μαν-σ-, Chantraine Gramm. hom. 1, 412) and μέμηνα (after τακῆναι: τέτηκα a. o.) are Greek formations. With the formal reorganisation goes the semantic emancipation; the connection with the widespread group μένος, μέμονα, μιμνήσκω (s. vv.) can still be seen e.g. in Z 100 f.: ἀλλ' ὅδε λίην | μαίνεται οὑδέ τίς οἱ δύναται μένος ἰσοφαρίζειν (cf. Porzig Satzinhalte 34). - [Not with J. Schmidt l.c. and Specht KZ 62, 79 (cf. also Schwyzer 694 n. 3) to μαιμάω.]Page in Frisk: 2,160-161Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > μαίνομαι

Adject.: λίνεος, - οῦς, - ός (IA.; λινέα, - αία f. `cord, noose' hell.), λίνινος (Tanagra IIIa) `linen', λιναῖος `id., of flax' (Hp., pap.), λινική f. `flax-taxes' (pap.). Verbs: λινεύω `catch with net' (Peripl. M. Rubr.); further late hypostases: δια-, ἐκ-, ἐπι-λινάω `slip through the net, get away from the net, inspect the net' (Phryn., Eust., H.), ἐκ-λινίζω `get away from the net' (Byz.). On λινεύς = κεστρεύς s. v. - Extensive on compp. and derivv. (also from Middel- and NGr.) Georgacas Dumbarton Oaks Papers 13, 253ff., esp. on λινούδιον, - ούτιον (S. 260ff.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: With λίνον with short vowel agree the Balto-Slavic forms, e.g. Lith. linaĩ pl. `flax, linen', Russ. lën, gen. lьná `id.' Opposite is Lat. līnum with long vowel, from where as loans Celt., e.g. OIr. līn `net' and Alb. li-ri, lį-ni `linen'. The Germ. words too, Goth. lein, ONo. OE OHG līn agree with Lat. līnum and are therefore to be considered as loans. Original identity is however possible, as the cultivation of flax in Middle-Europe is very old. It is however more probable that λίνον and līnum derive from a Mediterranean word, which as name of a new type, perhaps together with new techneques of preparation in Northern and Eastern Eeurope replaced local types and their names (e.g. ONo. hǫrr = OHG haro, OE fleax = OHG flahs, Russ. polotnó = CSl. platьno). In Indo-Iranian the word is (but not the idea) unknown. 20 θρά̄σσω
θρά̄σσω, θρά̄ττω rommeligGrammatical information: v.Meaning: `trouble, disquiet' (Pi., Hp., Att.);Other forms: Aor. θρᾶξαι (A., E.), pass. ἐθράχθη (S. Fr. 1055); perf. τέτρηχα intr. `be troubled, unquiet' (Il.).Etymology: Primary yot-present from *θρᾱχ-ι̯ω, beside which the old perfect *τέ-θρᾱχ-α (Schwyzer 702); the rarely occurring aorist forms θρᾶξαι, ἐθράχθη are innovations after the type πράσσω: πρᾶξαι a. o. for older ταράξαι (like δαμάσαι), to which the present ταράσσω (s. v.), with the same disyll. stem form as ταραχή; to τέ-τρηχ-α: ταραχ-ή cf. e. g. τέ-θνη-κα: θάνα-τος. A primary nominal formation with long stem as θρά̄σσω, τέτρηχα is τρᾱχύς `raw, hard'; s. v. There are no exact correcpondences ouside Greek. Bezzenberger BB 4, 320 adduced a widespread word for `dregs, sediment', which occurs in varying form: Germ., e. g. ONord. dregg f., pl. dreggiar, Balt.-Slav., e. g. OLith. drãges pl., Alb. drā, prob. also Lat. fracēs, -um. Further one compares a large group in Baltic, which through its acute would agree with the Greek words, e. g. Lith. dérgiu, dérgti `schlackerig sein (of the weather), get squalid etc.' [but the acute is caused by the Lith. g \< *g acc. to Winter-Kortlandt's law, and so does not agree with Greek]. (Here acc. to Specht KZ 59, 102 and 117 w. n. 3 also dìrgstu, dìrgti `relax, get weak etc.' (with dìrginu, dìrginti `relax'); but see the critical remarks in Fraenkel Lit. et. Wb. s. dìrginti and drėgti !. - More forms W.-Hofmann s. fracēs; and Fraenkel s. drãges; and Pok. 251; these forms are not clear. Cf.
